Nipon Goswami (3 September 1942 - 27 October 2022) was a veteran actor of Assamese cinema and theatre. Born at Kolibari in Tezpur to an acting father, Chandradhar Goswami, and a singer mother, he grew up in a household steeped in the stage. He trained at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune and briefly worked for the Assam government's publicity department.
He first appeared as a child artist in Piyoli Phukan (1957), and his first lead role was in Sangram. Dr. Bezbaruah (1969) made him a star, and he went on to act in more than 100 films, about 50 of them Assamese, along with a handful of Hindi and Bengali ones. After the early 1980s he took character roles as well as leads. Titles in our database include Baruar Sansar, Man Aru Maram, Maa, Siraj, Jeevan Baator Logori, Poley Poley Ure Mon, Mahasamar, Khobh, The Underworld and Bhaworiya. His last film was Dr. Bezbaruah 2.
He was equally committed to the stage, performing in mobile theatre companies such as Kohinoor, Abahan, Hengul and Shakuntala, and directing plays. He co-directed the film Pratima with Munin Barua. He received the Dr. Bhabendranath Saikia Award in 2021 and died of a heart ailment in Guwahati.
