Banahansa

Debahuti is the only child of Nilim and Kaveri Baruah, a so-called upper-class family. She studies at a fashionable school in Darjeeling and comes home for a three-month break, only to find her parents absorbed in clubs, parties and drink, living an unbalanced life.

Near their house lives the family of Kamalesh Choudhury, who holds an ordinary post-office job. Among these simple people she finds unexpected affection, and she feels a shy, nameless thrill towards his son Nupur. Her parents notice this. Debahuti's imagined world is then shattered, and she feels trapped in a closed room. She longs to be free and to fly away like a wild goose, the banahansa of the title.

Abdul Majid directed the film and wrote the screenplay and dialogue. It was produced by Seuj Bolchobi Sanstha of Jorhat. Bhupen Hazarika composed the music and wrote the lyrics, and the film has six songs. Sound recording was by Mrinal Guha Thakurta, Kalidas and Arabinda, and art direction by Aminur Rahman and Jogen Das.

In Abdul Majid's filmography, Banahansa came after Maram Trishna (1968) and Chameli Memsaab (1975) and was followed by Bonjui (1978) and Saat Nomboror Sandhanot (2016).
