Nayanmoni is a full-length colour Assamese film released in 1984 under the Rajendra Chalachitra banner. Suprabha Devi wrote, directed and produced it, making it the first Assamese film directed by a woman.

Story কাহিনী

Two brothers, Parag and Arup, live together with their mother. Parag is married to Jinu, while Arup loves Maina, known as Nayanmoni. With their mother's blessing the two marry, and Nayanmoni wins over her mother-in-law through care and affection.

Jinu, however, cannot bear her sister-in-law's happiness and schemes to turn the older woman against her. Gradually the mother-in-law comes to dislike Nayanmoni, and she is forced to leave the house with her husband and two children for a rented home.

Time passes and Arup dies. Left alone, Nayanmoni raises the two children through great hardship. In the end Parag, Jinu and the mother-in-law repent, and all of them go looking for Nayanmoni.

Production নিৰ্মাণ

The story, direction and production were all the work of Suprabha Devi. Her husband, Dwijendra Narayan Dev, had been a director and distributor of Assamese films, and she had produced several films with him. After his death she stepped into direction with this film.

Gunasindhu Hazarika wrote the screenplay and served as associate director. While he was working on the film in Calcutta he met with an accident that cost him his sight permanently. Sound was recorded by Kali-Mahadev and art direction was by Phatik Baruah.

The music was composed by Jitu-Tapan, with playback by the Bollywood singers Suman Kalyanpur and Bhupinder.

The film is remembered as the first Assamese feature directed by a woman.
