Story কাহিনী

A poor widow, mother of a son and a daughter, was once comfortably off but has been brought low by time. She struggles to put her son Ranjit through college. The changes of the 1950s, the floods of Assam's rivers and the storm of fast modern living alike, have altered the morals and character of society.

To support his mother and sister, Ranjit has to give up his studies. Friends who have tasted the new way of life urge him to earn money by any means, but his conscience will not let him. Nirupama Barua, the daughter of a tea-garden owner, is drawn to him and offers to pay for his higher education with her father's money. Ranjit refuses the favour. The slighted woman begins to nurse a wish for revenge, and when Ranjit joins her father's garden as an assistant manager, she finds a rare chance to act on it.

Her father is impressed by Ranjit's honesty and ability, and decides that he, rather than any other suitor, should marry Nirupama. But in keeping his integrity at work Ranjit makes many enemies, and a conspiracy against him leaves him shattered. The humiliated Nirupama decides not to help him, though her love for him remains in her heart. Ranjit's fight against the hostile circumstances goes on.
