Chikmik Bijuli

Bijuli is the daughter of a bidi seller. She roams the Fancy Bazaar area of Guwahati like a mystery, careless of everyone, and is skilled at song and dance. One day she learns Sattriya dance and begins teaching it at the same dance school. Objections follow: how can a girl who canvasses for bidis on the streets with her father teach Sattriya? Humiliated, Bijuli sees the school close.

Kesh Mahajan, a well-known businessman and owner of the Pakshiraj Bidi Company, and his chief manager Banamali Saikia cleverly bring her in as a promoter for the company. She is lodged in a notorious part of the city, where she is joined by a widow, Ajoli, and Ajoli's son Bhaiti. Prashanta, a mechanic in Harjit Singh's garage, loves Bijuli and proposes to her. Kesh Mahajan and Banamali Saikia oppose the marriage, since their intentions are of a different kind.

Bhupen Hazarika directed the film and also wrote its story, screenplay, music and lyrics. It was produced jointly by Tarachand Barjatya of Rajshri Productions and Hazarika's own Kamrup Chitra.

The film's songs were issued as a long-playing record, a first for an Assamese film. Besides Bhupen Hazarika and Jayanta Hazarika, Bollywood playback singers Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Asha Bhosle and Suman Kalyanpur sang in it.

As the first Assamese film to have its songs released as a long-playing record, it marks a milestone in the recorded music of Assamese cinema.
