Mridula Baruah is an Assamese film actress who was born in Sotia, in Sonitpur district, and grew up partly in Biswanath Chariali. She won first prize for acting at the All-Assam Surya Bora Memorial One-Act Play competition while in college, where the director and actor Abdul Majid noticed her talent.
Her first film role was in Upapath (1980), directed by Hemanta Dutta, but Moromi (1978), in which she played the lead, reached cinemas earlier and became her debut release. In Megh Mukti (1979) she played twin sisters, the first dual role in an Assamese film. Hits such as Bowari (1982) and Kokadeuta Nati aru Hati (1983) established her, and in Maa (1986) and Pratima (1987) she played women older than herself. She also took negative roles, as in Hiya Diya Niya (2000), and drew praise for Aawaran (1993), Itihas (1996) and Gun Gun Gane Gane (2002). Beyond films she acted in over 30 VCD films and in Hindi and Assamese television serials and telefilms, and appeared as a guest artist in Bhupen Hazarika's Hindi film Kalsandhya (1997). From 2000 she also worked as a producer, making two Doordarshan serials and about ten documentaries for the Government of Assam. Her honours include Best Supporting Actress at the 2005 Assam State Film Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Asom Star in 2021.
