Zubeen Garg (18 November 1972 to 19 September 2025) was a singer, composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who shaped the sound of contemporary Assam. He worked mostly in Assamese, Bengali and Hindi films and music, but also sang in around forty other languages and dialects, among them Bodo, Mising, Karbi, Rabha, Nepali, Kannada, Tamil and Sanskrit. Over a career of 33 years he recorded more than forty thousand songs, and was reportedly the highest paid singer in Assam.
Born in Tura, Meghalaya, to a family of Assamese Brahmins, he was named in homage to the conductor Zubin Mehta and later replaced the family name Borthakur with Garg, the name of his gotra. His father, a magistrate, wrote as the lyricist Kapil Thakur, and his mother Ily Borthakur was a singer. He played many instruments including the dhol, dotara, guitar, harmonica, harmonium, mandolin, keyboard and tabla.
In cinema he was most often the voice and composer behind the major hits of the 2000s and 2010s, with credits ranging from Hiya Diya Niya and Tumi Mor Matho Mor (both 2000) through Daag, Kanyadaan, Maya, Barud, Rang and Dinabandhoo to Ekhon Nedekha Nodir Xhipare (2012). He acted in films such as Mon Jaai (2008) and Rodor Sithi (2014), and wrote, directed, composed for and starred in Mission China (2017). His last role was in Roi Roi Binale (2025), which he wrote and scored.
