Story কাহিনী

Social activist Sridhar Ranjan has disappeared from Majuli. Nearly seven years later, as he is about to be declared legally dead, his old friend, the Mumbai journalist Abhijit Shandilya, travels to the island to look for him.

Majuli is full of suspicion. Terrorists and police alike distrust the outsider, and Abhijit finds himself a stranger in a place that gives him no easy answers. He befriends Sudakshina, the local guide who once worked with Sridhar. She lives with fears of her own and keeps her distance each time he gets close. As Abhijit follows the trail, the story moves toward the truth behind Sridhar's disappearance.

Production নিৰ্মাণ

Kotoky has said the story is fictional, though inspired by the disappearance of the activist Sanjoy Ghose, who was abducted from Majuli in 1997. The film was shot on Majuli, in Jorhat and in Mumbai, with music by Zubeen Garg and cinematography by Madhu Ambat. Bhupen Hazarika recorded a poem for the opening, speaking in the voice of the Brahmaputra. Kotoky recorded it with him in February 2010, when the singer was already ailing.

Reception সমালোচনা

The film received generally positive reviews. Utpal Borpujari called Kotoky's debut promising and other critics praised its honest treatment of the subject and the performance of Raj Zutshi. It won the Best Screenplay award at the Assam State Film Awards for 2010 to 2012. Its rejection by the jury of the 59th National Film Awards for the Best Assamese Film category, on the grounds that it was not sufficiently Assamese, caused a public controversy.

Legacy

The film is remembered both as a thoughtful treatment of Assam's years of insurgency and for the debate its national award rejection started about what makes a film regional.
