Story কাহিনী
In 1946, a short time before independence and partition, Gojen Keot lives with his grandmother in a village in Assam. He is honest and quick-tempered, makes a living from odd jobs and believes in Gandhi and in the promise that independence will end injustice. He is haunted by an earlier mistake as a young participant in the freedom movement, when he failed to deliver a note to marching protesters and two fighters died.
Most of the film follows his defiance of the richest man in town, who sees the coming partition as a chance to seize land. Gojen also fights caste restrictions and child marriage. He helps Joba, a Brahmin girl widowed at eighteen, to elope with the freedom fighter Madan Sharma against her father's wishes. He teaches Hasina, a Muslim girl, and later marries her and leaves the village.
The story then jumps to contemporary Assam, where Gojen's granddaughter, a senior police officer, carries on his fight against the same social evils.
