Arun Sarma

Arun Sarma was one of Assam's leading playwrights and novelists, and also a radio dramatist and broadcaster. Born in Dibrugarh, he graduated from Cotton College, worked briefly at The Assam Tribune, and from 1960 spent most of his career at the Guwahati station of All India Radio, retiring in 1990 as Director of its North East Service. He wrote and directed 47 radio plays there, and his radio documentaries earned international recognition.

His best-known play is Sri Nibaran Bhattacharyya. His novel Ashirbadar Rong won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1998, he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2003, and he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2010.

His link to Assamese cinema is a modest one. He acted in the film Sandhyaraag (1975) and took the lead in the telefilm Stabdha Prahar (2004). In our database he is credited as a writer of Ajeyo (2014). He died on 27 March 2017.
