Jahnu Barua is one of the most decorated directors of Assamese cinema. Born in Sivasagar in 1952, he studied science at B. Borooah College in Guwahati before turning to film, and has made features in both Assamese and Hindi.
His Assamese films in the Fita database run from Aporoopa (1982) and Papori (1986) through Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai (1987), Bonani (1989), Firingoti (1992), Xagoroloi Bohudoor (1995), Pokhi (1998), Kushal (2001), Konikar Ramdhenu (2002) and Tora (2004) to Baandhon (2012), Ajeyo (2014) and Bhoga Khirikee (2018). He also wrote or produced several of them, including Aporoopa, Xagoroloi Bohudoor and Baandhon.
Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai won the National Film Award for best film in 1987 and a Silver Leopard at Locarno in 1988. Xagoroloi Bohudoor brought him the National Award for Best Director in 1995, and later Assamese-language National Awards followed for Baandhon and Ajeyo. Tora was named best children's film at the National Awards. He received the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2015, and chaired the Indian Film Directors' Association in 1993.

হালধীয়া চৰায়ে বাওধান খায়ে ১৯৮৭ চনত ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় চলচ্চিত্ৰ বঁটাত শ্ৰেষ্ঠ ছবিৰ সন্মান লাভ কৰে আৰু ১৯৮৮ চনত লোকাৰ্নো উৎসৱত ৰূপৰ চিতাবাঘ বঁটা পায়। সাগৰলৈ বহুদূৰৰ বাবে ১৯৯৫ চনত তেওঁ শ্ৰেষ্ঠ পৰিচালকৰ ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় বঁটা লাভ কৰে। পিছত বান্ধোন আৰু অজেয়ৰ বাবেও অসমীয়া ভাষাৰ শ্ৰেষ্ঠ ছবিৰ ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় বঁটা পায়। তোৰা শ্ৰেষ্ঠ শিশু ছবি হিচাপে স্বীকৃতি পাইছিল। ২০০৩ চনত পদ্মশ্ৰী আৰু ২০১৫ চনত পদ্মভূষণ লাভ কৰা বৰুৱাই ১৯৯৩ চনত ইণ্ডিয়ান ফিল্ম ডাইৰেক্টৰ্ছ এছোচিয়েচনৰ সভাপতিৰ দায়িত্বও পালন কৰিছিল।
