Jangfai Jonak (From the Shadow of Silence) is an Assamese film released on 13 January 2012, directed by Sanjib Sabhapandit and produced by Utpal Kumar Das. It was the only Assamese film chosen for the Indian Panorama section of the 42nd International Film Festival of India in Goa.

Story কাহিনী

The film looks at superstition in Assamese society and its harmful effects through two contemporary stories. In one, a simple teenage boy is unwillingly accepted by the community as a godman, a baba. In the other, an innocent girl is branded a witch and brutally killed by a self-serving astrologer and a dishonest man who exploit the public's blind beliefs.

Production নিৰ্মাণ

Sanjib Sabhapandit directed and wrote the screenplay. The film was shot on a high definition Sony video camera and is described as the first Assamese film shot with an HD camera.

Parashar Baruah was the cinematographer and Anirudha Baruah composed the music. Ratul Deka and Saurav Dutta edited, Anup Hazarika handled art direction, and Rajat Seth was the DI colourist. Paran Sharma did make-up, Digant Kalita and Pankaj Kalita managed production, Debajit Gayan was sound recordist, Jatin Sharma of Filmcraft did voice recording, and the final mix was by Debajit Changmai at Rajkamal Kalamandir, Mumbai.

Reception সমালোচনা

Critics praised the film warmly and it was shown at many film festivals. It was selected for the Indian Panorama at the 42nd IFFI in Goa (2011), screened at the 3rd Guwahati International Film Festival and at the Habitat Film Festival, and was nominated for Best Assamese Feature at the 58th National Film Awards.

Legacy

In Sanjib Sabhapandit's filmography, Jangfai Jonak came after Juye Poora Xoon (2004) and was followed by Jeeya Jurir Xubax (2014).
