Jatinga Ityadi

A British couple visit Assam looking for the grave of the husband's grandfather, who was once a tea planter. An underground rebel group kidnaps them to draw international attention. Unable to speak to the foreigners, the group picks up an educated but frustrated young man who speaks English fluently. Eager to belong to the so-called movement, Manab, the protagonist, joins readily.

Inside the hideout, Manab discovers that his idea of the group and its struggle for independence was entirely wrong. He decides to help the British couple escape and is killed in the crossfire among the militants.

Sabhapandit has explained the title: Jatinga is a small place in Assam where birds are said to commit suicide, but in fact they are lured to their deaths. At night people hold bamboo torches to attract the birds and club them when they fly close. In the same way, he says, boys are lured into a death trap in the guise of revolution. The music is by Dipak Sarma.

The film was chosen for the Indian Panorama section of the International Film Festival of India in 2007 for its depiction of militancy in Assam.
