Production নিৰ্মাণ

In 1953 a cultural body called Milit Shilpi Samaj took shape in Jorhat, started by the dramatist Indreswar Barthakur, with Bhuban Ranjan Barthakur as general secretary and Abdul Majid as cultural secretary. That year the group staged Ramesh Sharma's play Ronga Police. Nip Barua and Brajen Barua attended a performance and urged that it be made into a film.

The society was already preparing to film Syed Abdul Malik's novel Matir Chaki, but on the advice of the two visitors it chose the play instead. In 1957 a company named Milit Shilpi Cine Productions was registered and Nip Barua was given charge of the production. The money was raised jointly by the members of the society.

The music director was Nizamuddin Ahmed Hazarika, credited on screen simply as Nizam. Playback singers were Ranu Bhattacharya (Phukan) and Muhibuddin Ahmed (Tagor), and the lyricist was Nurul Haque.

Reception সমালোচনা

The film was released in January 1958, alongside a film called Mother India. It was first distributed by Achkaran Jalan of Jorhat, and Nip Barua himself later kept it in circulation for some years.

Ronga Police was the first Assamese talkie to win the President's Silver Medal. Before it, Piyoli Phukan (1955, directed by Phani Sarma), Maak Aru Morom (1957, directed by Nip Barua) and Tejimola had each received a Certificate of Merit.

Legacy

In Nip Barua's filmography, Ronga Police came after Smritir Parash (1956) and Maak Aru Moram (1957) and was followed by Amar Ghar (1959) and Narakasur (1962).
