Akon

Akon is a poor boy who has lost his parents and lives with his grandmother in the compound of a wealthy Choudhury, where his late father once worked. Though poor, he is full of life. During a school holiday, a tour is arranged for the children to see different parts of Assam and learn about its geography, history and culture. A tourist bus is hired and the teacher Diwakar goes along as guide. Akon cannot afford his share of the cost, but his friends will not leave him behind, so they pool small contributions and cover it.

The children visit Barpeta, Hajo, Guwahati, Kaziranga and Sivasagar, among other places, seeing temples, forests, a zoo, museums and tea gardens. Diwakar is strict about discipline but teaches in an unusual way, telling stories and episodes of history along the route.

Akon is fearless and never shirks a task. His popularity makes a boy named Abir jealous, and Abir often tries to humiliate him, but Akon takes it with a smile. Abir slips and falls near a hilltop, and Akon tries to save him. Abir survives, but Akon slips and dies. His body is brought home, and his grandmother, left with no one else, faints at the sight. His friends then tell her that from that day they are her grandchildren.

The film was made under the banner of GBC Productions and produced by Chiranjilal Choudhury. Gauri Barman directed it from his own story, and Nirod Choudhury wrote the screenplay. Bhupen Hazarika composed the music and wrote the songs, and the film also includes a borgeet composed by Srimanta Sankardeva. It is a colour film, released in 1980.

Akon is described as the first Assamese children's film.
