Aparajeyo, released on 6 May 1970, is described as the first Assamese film shaped by the parallel or art-cinema tradition. Shot in black and white, it was made by four directors working together and starred the Bengali and Hindi screen actress Rakhee.

Story কাহিনী

Set against the satra town of Barpeta, the story follows the love between a refugee girl from East Bengal and a young man of Barpeta. Together they try to overcome the obstacles of a society bound by many customs and reach the goal they have set.

The traditional boat race of Barpeta plays an important part in how the story unfolds. Rakhee plays the refugee girl, newcomer Prashanta Hazarika plays the young man, and Paragdhar Chaliha has another major role.

Production নিৰ্মাণ

The film was credited under the name Chaturanga, reflecting its four directors: Phani Talukdar, Atul Bordoloi, Gauri Barman and Munin Bayon. Atul Bordoloi wrote the screenplay, adapting a radio play by Phani Talukdar titled More Maluwa. Salil Choudhury composed the music.

Outdoor scenes were filmed at Barpeta Satra, Manas, the tea gardens of Upper Assam and villages near North Guwahati. The film includes the famous Barpeta boat race and a dance by the Bollywood dancer Lakshmichhaya. That dance, along with the recording of a song sung by Lata Mangeshkar for Rakhee, was done in a studio in Mumbai.
