Production নিৰ্মাণ

The idea came about after Pulak Gogoi travelled to Washington for an exhibition of his paintings and sold around forty of them. On the way home a lost suitcase left him waiting in a Mumbai hotel, where he met Bijoy Choudhury and Piyush Kanti Roy, then working in Hindi cinema. Bhupen Hazarika joined them and urged him to make a film, promising to score it. Gogoi wrote the screenplay from a story he had written as a student for the magazine of Jagannath Barooah College.

Apart from Bijoy Sankar, no established performers were used. The hero, Mehtab Hussain, was then studying at the Assam Agricultural University, and Regina Begum was a girl from Hedayatpur in Guwahati. The film cost about 125,000 rupees. Sound recording was by Aboni Chatterjee, Sushil Singh and Satish Chauhan, with re-recording by Satyen Chatterjee, and the banner was Bindu Films. Hazarika composed the music and wrote the songs.

Reception সমালোচনা

The film did not find an audience and ran poorly in cinemas, so its cost was never recovered. It shows some influence of the parallel cinema movement that reached Assam in the 1970s. It was screened at the Jila Puthibharal auditorium in Guwahati during an international film festival in December 2011, attended by the lead actors Mehtab Hussain and Regina Begum.

Legacy

In Pulak Gogoi's filmography, Khoj was followed by Srimati Mohimamoyee (1979) and Sendur (1984).
