Abdul Majid's Chameli Memsaab is a tea-garden romance based on a story by Nirode Choudhury. It won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Assamese and for Bhupen Hazarika's music, and was remade in Bengali and Hindi.

Story কাহিনী

The film is set on a tea estate in Assam. Berkeley, the British owner, falls in love with Chameli, a local girl who works on the estate. They marry, but later he is blamed for her death by suicide.

Abdul Majid directed, adapting a short story by the journalist and author Nirode Choudhury. The leads were George Baker and Binita Borgohain, and the music is by Bhupen Hazarika.

Reception সমালোচনা

The film was a critical and commercial success, and George Baker became a matinee idol in Assam. At the 1975 National Film Awards it won Best Feature Film in Assamese and Best Music Direction for Bhupen Hazarika. It was shown in the Focus: North East section of the 44th International Film Festival of India in Goa in 2013.

Legacy

The story was remade in Bengali as Chameli Memsaheb (1978), directed by Indar Sen with George Baker and Rakhee Gulzar, and in Hindi as Chameli Memsaab (1981), directed by Ajit Lahiri.
