Hepaah

Five young musicians in a small town plan to launch their band at a concert. Kakati, a middle-aged furniture shop owner, offers help, becomes their mentor and names the band Hepaah. They find popularity and acclaim until a rich man proposes producing an album. The record is a commercial success and brings the group money and an easier life, but also loosens their commitment to music. Disillusioned, Kakati walks away. The members make a last effort to hold on to their ideals, but it is too late, and their aspirations remain unfulfilled.

Borua, previously known for several acclaimed documentaries, made Hepaah as his first fiction feature and wanted to give Assamese filmmaking a fresh look. He had admired Biju Phukan since childhood and wrote the part of Kakati with him in mind, and Phukan accepted at once, drawn to the bold subject. Work on the music started in March 2003, filming began in May and was completed in only 24 days. Jitul Sonowal composed the music, with lyrics by Nirmal Prabha Bordoloi and Nalini Mahanta Dutta and vocals by Sonowal, Tarali Sarma and Rishiraj Sharma. Mothiasiga Pictures produced.

Hepaah was released on 19 December 2003.
