Phani Sarma was one of the foremost figures of Assamese stage and early cinema. He began in the theatre at Tezpur's Bana Rangamancha, where his father was also a noted actor, and later joined the travelling company Kohinoor Opera and then Purbajyoti Bhramyoman Theatre. In 1950 he was given the title Natasurya for his service to Assamese drama.
His film career opened with Joymoti (1935), the first Assamese film, directed by Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, in which he played Gathi Hazarika. He followed it with Agarwala's Indramalati (1939), as the hero's friend Lalit, and also appears in Devdas (1937) according to our database. In 1948 he made Siraj with Bishnu Prasad Rabha, and in 1955 he directed and starred in Piyoli Phukan as its hero. Our database also credits him as director of Dhumuha (1957), Puwati Nishar Sapon and Kecha Son (both 1959) and Bibhrat (1972), and as an actor in Era Bator Sur (1956) and Narakasur (1962). His last acting role was in Ito Sito Bahuto (1963).
As a playwright he wrote Kiya, Nag-Pas, Kola-Bazar and the historical drama Bhogjora, and made a stage play of Siraj on Hindu-Muslim unity, which he staged in more than a hundred places. He also translated J. B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls into Assamese.
