Story কাহিনী

Devdas, from a wealthy Brahmin family, and Paro, whose family has less status and belongs to a merchant caste, grow from childhood friends into lovers. Devdas's father opposes the match because of the difference in wealth and caste. When Devdas realises he cannot live without Paro, he goes to find her, but she has already been married off to an older man with children.

Devdas sinks into drink. He meets the courtesan Chandramukhi, who falls in love with him and cares for him. In his drunken dreams the two women replace each other, so that it is never clear whether he lets go of Paro and finds peace with Chandramukhi. At the end he returns to meet Paro, and dies at her doorstep before he can see her.
