Production নিৰ্মাণ

After Anuraag (2004), this was Chakravarty's fifth film as director. He had been turning the idea over since reading Apurba Sarma's story Bahiroloi Jowa Baat in 1988. As he explained, the original is less a conventional story than a state of mind, written in the days of the Foreigners' Movement, and his film tries to reflect the mindset of ordinary people of that time. Producer Sanjive Narain described making cinema as a social responsibility.

Shooting ran from November 2010 to March 2011 under the working title The Gateway, mostly in Guwahati and Nameri, with post-production in Chennai. Kapil Bora, who plays Dwijen, took part in many workshops to prepare, and most of his scenes are silent or nearly so. The film carries English subtitles.
