Jayanta Hazarika was a singer and composer of Assamese music and cinema, born in Mangaldai on 20 September 1943. The youngest brother of Bhupen Hazarika, he grew up in an artistic family and developed an early gift for singing and instruments such as the harmonium, accordion and guitar.
He emerged as an innovative voice in Assamese modern music, weaving Western chords and orchestration with regional folk melodies. In Assamese cinema he sang lead tracks for Maniram Dewan (1964) and composed the soundtrack for films including Bristi (1974), Dharmapatni, Niyoti and Natun Asha. His soundtrack for Bristi, created alongside singers Kul Barua and Nirmala Mishra, stands as a milestone in Assamese film music.
In 1977 he founded 'Sur Bahini', a musical procession that travelled across Assam singing in public squares to raise relief funds for flood victims. He passed away suddenly in Kolkata on 15 October 1977 at the age of 34, leaving behind a lasting musical legacy.

তেওঁ অসমীয়া আধুনিক গান আৰু চলচ্চিত্ৰ সংগীতলৈ এক নতুন গতি আনিছিল। পাশ্চাত্য সংগীতৰ ঐক্যতান আৰু স্থানীয় লোকগীতৰ সুৰৰ সংমিশ্ৰণেৰে তেওঁ এক নিজস্ব ধাৰা সৃষ্টি কৰে। অসমীয়া চলচ্চিত্ৰত তেওঁ 'মণিৰাম দেৱান' (১৯৬৪) ছবিত কণ্ঠদান কৰাৰ লগতে 'বৃষ্টি' (১৯৭৪), 'ধৰ্মপত্নী', 'নিয়তি' আৰু 'নতুন আশা'ৰ দৰে ছবিত সংগীত পৰিচালনা কৰিছিল। 'বৃষ্টি' ছবিৰ গীতসমূহে অসমীয়া চলচ্চিত্ৰ সংগীতত এক মাইলৰ খুঁটি স্থাপন কৰিছিল।
১৯৭৭ চনত তেওঁ অসমৰ বানপীড়িত ৰাইজৰ সাহায্যৰ অৰ্থে 'সুৰ বাহিনী' নামৰ এক অনন্য সাংস্কৃতিক দল গঠন কৰি ৰাজপথত গীত গাই পুঁজি সংগ্ৰহ কৰিছিল। মাত্ৰ ৩৪ বছৰ বয়সতে ১৯৭৭ চনৰ ১৫ অক্টোবৰত কলকাতাত তেওঁৰ অকাল মৃত্যু ঘটে।
