Ramen Baruah

Ramen Baruah is a music director and playback singer of Assamese cinema, born and raised in the Latasil area of Guwahati. He came from the well-known Baruah family, and his brothers Brajen Baruah and Nip Baruah were also part of Assamese film. Music ran through his early life, and as a teenager he was associated with the Indian People's Theatre Association.

He began as a singer, lending his voice to Nip Baruah's Smritir Paras in 1955. In 1959 he worked as assistant music director on Amar Ghar, and in 1969 he composed independently for the first time, for Brajen Baruah's Dr. Bezbarua, whose songs helped make it a big hit. In total he scored 27 films on his own, and later credits include Baruar Sansar, Mukuta, Yog-Biyog, Lalita and Kokadeuta Nati Aru Hati. Among the films in our database is Antoni Mor Naam (1986). He was a selected singer and an approved composer for All India Radio in Guwahati.

He composed to lyrics by writers such as Keshab Mahanta and Nabakanta Barua, and gave early playback opportunities to singers who later became established names. He received the State Lifetime Achievement Award from the Government of Assam in 2010, and a lifetime achievement award from Filmfare (Assam) in 2024.
