Hemanta Dutta

Hemanta Dutta was an Assamese dramatist, lyricist, actor and director, born at Kharupetia in Darrang district in 1941. He wrote more than a hundred plays and over five hundred songs, and directed many stage productions. His one film as director is Upapath (1980) in our database.

As a lyricist he began working professionally with the film Notun Asha (1977). His songs have been sung by artists including Zubeen Garg and Jayanta Hazarika, and he wrote lyrics for films such as Xadori, Sonmaina, Bohagor Duporia, Hiya Diya Niya and Nayak. The 116-line song from Pita-Putra is described as the longest Assamese song. He also acted in films including Anirban, Ghar Sansar, Sewali and Barud.

Honours include the Bhaben Baruah Award (2017) and the Assam Saurabh Award (2024). He died in Guwahati on 11 August 2025.
