Bidya Rao is an actress of Assamese and Bengali cinema, though most of her work is in Assamese. Born in Dibrugarh to an Assamese mother and a Maharashtrian father, she grew up in Calcutta. At the age of six she appeared as a child in Bhupen Hazarika's Shakuntala (1961), and she later acted in Hazarika's Pratidhwani (1965) and Lotighoti (1966), playing the central female role in the latter.

Her breakthrough came with Aranya (1971), directed by Samarendra Narayan Dev, in which she played the lead opposite Biju Phukan. The film won the National Award for Best Regional Film and was a commercial success, and its song "Xile Xile Theka Khale" became popular. After it she received offers for many more Assamese films, and through the 1970s and 1980s she starred in a number of popular hits, including Ghar Sansar and Mon Mandir (directed by Shiva Prasad Thakur) and Xendur (directed by Pulok Gogoi, opposite Tapan Das). In Sarothi (1991), directed by Bhabendranath Saikia, she played an unconventional character; the film won the National Award for Best Assamese Film. She also acted in twelve Bengali films and on the travelling theatre stage. She married the film distributor and producer M. P. N. Nair, and moved to Guwahati in 1980. Jyotirupa honoured her with a lifetime achievement award, and the Assam government gave her the Natasurya Phani Sarma Award.
