Tezimola

Tezimola is twelve when her mother dies. Under pressure from the servant Ligira Bahua, her father Saud marries again, to Bahua's lover Pani. Saud leaves on a trading journey and the stepmother begins to torment Tezimola. By sixteen, she is to be married to Siva, her childhood friend whom the household has sheltered, which her stepmother learns, and she plots with Bahua to kill the girl.

On his voyage Saud dreams that Pani has killed Tezimola and buried her in the garden, where she has been reborn as a gourd. When Pani goes to pick the gourd it speaks and forbids it. She cuts it down, and Tezimola grows as a lemon tree, then, thrown into the river, as a lotus, whose flower tells Saud the story of her murder. Saud wakes and returns. He learns that Pani drove Siva out. Tezimola had taken refuge in an ashram. Pani, trying to flee with valuables, saw Bahua trampled by a tame elephant, and she lost her sanity. Siva and Tezimola are married with great celebration.

Anowar Hussain directed and produced the film through Anowar Films of Guwahati's Kumarpara. Although based on the folk tale, the story was changed considerably to make it realistic. Hussain, the son of a government contractor, studied filmmaking in 1952 and 1953 at Chetan Anand's Mohan Pictures Art Academy, directed and produced his first film Sarapat at 22 in 1955, and made six Assamese films in all. In 2010 the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy gave him a lifetime achievement award.

Tezimola won the President's Certificate of Merit for the best Assamese film in the regional category.

In Anuwar Hussain's filmography, Tezimola came after Sarapat (1956) and Natun Prithibi (1958) and was followed by Paap aru Praischitta (1977).
