Sutrapat

It is 1982, and the movement against foreigners is at its height, leaving the cultural scene in a tense hush. Despite this, Digant and his friends decide to stage the play Siraj and begin rehearsals. Then assembly elections are announced, unrest breaks out all around and communal clashes erupt in places.

Conscious of cinema's social influence, Digant and his friends plan a short film on communal harmony. Chopra, an experienced and disheartened cameraman, promises to work on it, and it was he who first drew Digant to the medium. With Anwar and a few other friends, they finish the film.

Then the early enthusiasm fades as problems of distribution and debt close in. They go from one government office to another and get no response. One by one the friends drift away, and even Malbika, whom Digant loves, humiliates him one day. Still, he refuses to give up hope and meets a minister, to no avail. He comes out with the film can on his shoulder. Suddenly Malbika calls out from a city bus, his confidence returns, and at dusk he gradually merges into the crowd on the road.

I.P. Productions made the film, and Mridul Gupta directed it. Tapan Das plays the lead. Syed Akhtar Mirza, an actor from Bollywood, appears as the cameraman Chopra. Bibhuranjan Choudhury composed the music and Keshav Mahanta wrote the lyrics. Our database gives a release date of 11 December 1987.
