Prathom Ragini

প্ৰথম ৰাগিনী

Prathom Ragini is a 1987 Assamese film and the first that Dhiru Bhuyan directed. Set largely in Shillong, it follows a young woman who learns that the man she loves is already married, and it won the national award for the best Assamese film.

Story কাহিনী

Mridupawan Barua, an engineer, leaves his newly married wife Latika at their home in Upper Assam and moves to Shillong for a job with a private company. He promises to bring her once he finds a place to live.

In Shillong he meets Mini Andrews Barbora, a Christian girl who studied at college while living with her elder sister Ruth, a schoolteacher. The two fall in love, and Mini does not know that he is married.

One day Mridupawan receives a letter from Latika reminding him of his promise. While he is away, Latika and Mini meet and the secret comes out. Mini's dreams collapse, and to escape her pain she decides to become a nurse, so that she can help others who suffer as she has.

Production নিৰ্মাণ

The film was made under the banner of Trench Asia Films 86. The screenplay by Gautam Bora and Mohammad Sadullah is based on Achal Taka, a story by Rama Das. Padma Barkataki wrote the dialogue and Kirtikamal Bhuyan the lyrics. Malabika Bora provided the singing voice, and Anup Mukhopadhyay handled sound recording.

It was released on 2 October 1987.

Reception সমালোচনা

At the 35th National Film Festival in 1987, Prathom Ragini received the Silver Lotus for the best film in Assamese. The producer, Surendra Nath Bora, received a Silver Lotus and a cash prize of 20,000 rupees, and the director, Dhiru Bhuyan, a Silver Lotus with 10,000 rupees.
