In a village, the old man Dayaram, hoping to see a family flourish, lets Nilakanta settle down. Nilakanta's friend Kalidas has fallen for Ambika, but when Nilakanta says he will marry her, Kalidas steps aside and goes away on business.

After her husband dies, Ambika struggles to raise her children, including an infant, by doing menial work in the village. One evening she catches four timid pigeons, which stirs a little courage in her. Kalidas returns after many years and spends long hours in Dayaram's courtyard. Dayaram, who dreams that Ambika's hardship will end, plays matchmaker. He weaves baskets so that she can take the pigeons to market and makes sure Kalidas goes with her. By dusk the pigeons are unsold, and Ambika does not refuse Kalidas's offer to buy them for a meal. The light of the market lamps flickers on her face.
