Tarali Sarma

Tarali Sarma is an Assamese singer and music director, best known for winning the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 2003. The award recognised her singing of a devotional ghosa in Manju Borah's Akashitorar Kothare, a piece performed without any instrumental accompaniment. She also composed the music for that film, her first as a film music director.

She grew up in a musical household: her father, Prabhat Sarma, was a folk exponent, flautist and music director. She began composing for All India Radio Guwahati at the age of 12 and is a regular artist of Akashvani and Doordarshan. She is also described as the first woman music director of Assam's mobile theatre.

In Assamese cinema her music credits in our database include Akashitarar Kathare (2003), Laaj (2004), Basundhara (2009), Othello (2014), Sarvagunakar Srimanta Sankardeva (2016), Tumi Aahibane (2017), Bornodi Bhotiai (2018) and Calendar (2018). She has also scored Life in a Puppet and Xubala. Her albums include Abhiman, Mukoli and Henguliya, and in 2007 she founded the production company Windsongs.
