Prodyut Kumar Deka, born in Guwahati on 18 April 1978, is a film and stage director, screenwriter, author and editor of the magazine Roopkar. He made his name in Assamese cinema with Dhunia Tirutabur (2009), which he both wrote and directed, a film built around the disappearance of an artist.
He followed it with Samiran Barua Ahi Ase (2012), a political drama; Surjasta (2013), on the neglect of children, which earned Filmfare Awards (East) nominations for its lead actors; and Borosi (2014), a suspense drama. Dristi (2016) is a television film based on a Tagore story. He also directed one segment of the anthology film Ji Golpor Sesh Nai and co-wrote Orong and Rum Vodka Whiskey.
Outside films he directs plays with the theatre group Aikyatan, writes on cinema in Assamese newspapers, and has published books on cinema, including a biography of Biju Phukan that won a Prag Cine Award. He also writes English fiction, notably the Ambari novels.
