Tora's Husband

The drama follows a family man whose life and relationships begin to come apart as the pandemic takes hold. It is told in the same intimate, observational manner as Rima Das's earlier work, staying close to a household under pressure.

Das wrote, shot, edited, produced and directed the film, which was made in Chaygaon in Assam. She has said the protagonist's story reflects her own experience of living and working through the pandemic, and that shooting over two years in a time of loss, lockdowns and fear was harder than on her earlier films, with the same restlessness and dread running through her characters. She dedicated the film to her father, Bharat Chandra Das, who died during the pandemic.

The film premiered in the Platform Prize section of the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, the first Indian film to compete there and Das's third film in a row to premiere at Toronto. It was then shown at the Busan International Film Festival and the Kolkata International Film Festival in 2022, and at the World Film Festival of Bangkok. Toronto programmer Ravi Srinivasan called it a perceptive drama about how tensions can erode lives in hard times, with documentary-like attentiveness to the pressure on small-business owners.

It is among the most direct cinematic records of the pandemic from the Northeast and a further step in Das's one-person style of filmmaking.
