Rima Das is a filmmaker from Kalardiya, a village near Chhaygaon in Assam, and the daughter of a teacher. She studied sociology, cleared the National Eligibility Test, and went to Mumbai in 2003 hoping to act, appearing in plays including an adaptation of Premchand's Godaan. She then turned to filmmaking with no formal training, working as a one-woman crew who writes, directs, produces, edits and shoots her films.
She made the short Pratha in 2009, then her first feature, Antardrishti (Man with the Binoculars, 2016), shot on a DSLR in Kalardiya from 2013. Her second feature, Village Rockstars (2017), about Dhunu, a village girl who dreams of owning a guitar, won the National Award for Best Film and Best Editor. It was India's official entry for the 90th Academy Awards, the first Assamese film to be submitted. Bulbul Can Sing (2018) premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, as did Tora's Husband (2022), the first Indian film in its Platform competition. Village Rockstars 2 (2024) premiered at Busan and won the Kim Jiseok Award, and Not a Hero is listed for 2026.
GQ India named her one of the 50 most influential young Indians in 2018, and in February 2018 Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University conferred a doctorate on her.
