Story কাহিনী
Pitambar Mahajan is a wealthy, childless man whose wife has long been bedridden with an incurable illness. Anxious that his line will end, he begins a secret relationship, arranged with the help of the priest Krishnakanta, with Damayanti, a poor Brahmin widow who already has a child. When she becomes pregnant, he hopes to give both the relationship and the unborn child social standing by marrying her.
His hope does not last. Damayanti, though poor, is a Brahmin's daughter and cannot reconcile herself to carrying the child of a Shudra. She terminates the pregnancy and buries the fetus in her garden. Grieving the loss of his dream, Pitambar goes out at night and starts digging up the spot, wanting to touch what was buried there.
