Bhim Baruah is a well-to-do widower with two grown sons, Jibeshwar and Noreshwar, both of marriageable age. The sons protest, and when protest fails they go on a hunger strike, supported morally by their aunt Savitri and joined by many young people.

Baruah's trusted aide Harakanta Bisaya sows division among the protesters, and Baruah signs an agreement with his sons promising not to marry. He then breaks it and quietly brings a bride home. The sons take their father to court, but the verdict goes to Baruah and the sons lose.
