Lakhimi

The film centres on Lakhimi, the beloved daughter-in-law of Madhu Master, and tries to capture the joys and sorrows of simple village life. Widowed soon after marriage, Lakhimi looks after her motherless brother-in-law Bhabanath and her father-in-law with great affection. This makes Madhu Master's second wife, her step mother-in-law, jealous, and she spreads a false rumour of an improper relationship between Lakhimi and Bhabanath.

Things go so far that Lakhimi has to go back to her mother's house. Bhabanath goes to bring her back the next day, but she does not return. Meanwhile his childhood friend Bakuli is also driven away from him by the same scheming, and Lakhimi falls seriously ill at her mother's home. In the end the stepmother regrets her mistake and welcomes her daughter-in-law back, and Bhabanath regains the sister-in-law who was like a mother to him.

Bhaben Das, a native of Rampur village in Kamrup district, worked on several Assamese and Bengali films and became well known for directing the Bengali film Kanamachi. Brajen Baruah composed the music for Lakhimi, and the lyrics were written by Keshab Mahanta.

In Bhaben Das's filmography, Lakhimi was followed by Upograh (1972) and Dharmakai (1976).
