Joymoti

জয়মতী
Directed by Manju Borah

Manju Borah's Joymoti retells the story of the seventeenth-century Ahom princess, presenting her as a visionary historical figure rather than as a symbol of wifely devotion.

Story কাহিনী

The film is set in seventeenth-century Assam and follows Joymoti Konwari, the Ahom princess who was tortured to death for refusing to reveal the hiding place of her husband Gadapani. Borah differs from the 1935 film by Jyotiprasad Agarwala, in which Joymoti's sacrifice for her husband was the main theme. Here the focus falls on her role in a time of grave political instability in the Ahom kingdom, and on her sacrifice for the sake of the kingdom itself.
