Shakuntala

Shakuntala (1961) is an Assamese musical film directed by Bhupen Hazarika, who also composed its music. Based on the legend of Shakuntala from Hindu mythology, it features Amala Katarki, Phani Sarma and Tara. It was the first Assamese film to use colour sequences.

Production নিৰ্মাণ

The film was produced under the Kamrup Chitra banner and was Hazarika's second film as director, after Era Bator Sur (1956). Several songs were sung by Hazarika himself, along with playback singers including Shamshad Begum. Parts of the film used colour, while the rest was shot in black and white.

Reception সমালোচনা

Shakuntala won the President's Silver Medal for Best Feature Film in Assamese at the 9th National Film Awards, held in 1962. It is regarded as one of Hazarika's most significant films and was a commercial and critical success on release.

Legacy

In Bhupen Hazarika's filmography, Shakuntala came after Era Bator Sur (1956) and was followed by Pratidhwani (1964) and Pratiddhani (1964).
