Mohini

Mohini, also known as Mohini Rajkumari, was an actress of early Assamese cinema from Mahurimukh in present-day Golaghat district, and is also remembered as the first Assamese woman to work as a government contractor. Alongside business interests that included managing a river fishery and running shops, she built the road linking Mahurimukh to National Highway 37.

When Jyoti Prasad Agarwala set out to film Joymoti, the first Assamese film, three actresses were found at Mahurimukh: Aideu Handique, Mohini and her sister Brateswari. Mohini played the queen mother Rajmao in the film, which was shot at a temporary studio on the Bholaguri tea estate. Around four decades later she took an important role as the heroine's mother in Padum Barua's Ganga Chilonir Pakhi, which was shot from 1970 and released in 1976. Our database also lists her in Monumoti (1941). She died in 1951.
