Pramathesh Chandra Barua (24 October 1903 to 29 November 1951) was one of the leading figures of Indian cinema before independence. Born in Gauripur in Dhubri district, Assam, he came from the royal family of Gauripur, where his father Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua was the zamindar. He studied at Hare School and graduated in science from Presidency College in Calcutta in 1924.
His first exposure to cinema came on a trip to Europe after graduation. Returning home, he briefly served in the Assam Legislative Assembly and joined the Swaraj Party, but eventually moved to Calcutta and entered films, to his father's dismay. He began in 1926 with British Dominion Films, made his first screen appearance in Debaki Kumar Bose's Panchashar in 1929, and then went independent as a director.
In Assamese cinema he is remembered for Devdas (1937), the Assamese version of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novella, which was the last of three language versions he directed, after the Bengali and Hindi ones. In it Phani Sarma played Devdas.

স্নাতক ডিগ্ৰী লোৱাৰ পিছত ইউৰোপ ভ্ৰমণলৈ যাওঁতে তেওঁ প্ৰথমবাৰৰ বাবে চলচ্চিত্ৰৰ প্ৰতি আকৰ্ষিত হয়। ঘৰলৈ উভতি আহি তেওঁ কিছুদিন অসম বিধানসভাত সদস্য হিচাপে কাৰ্যনিৰ্বাহ কৰে আৰু স্বৰাজ পাৰ্টিত যোগ দিয়ে, কিন্তু পিতৃৰ আপত্তি সত্ত্বেও তেওঁ শেষত কলিকতালৈ যায় আৰু চলচ্চিত্ৰ জগতত প্ৰৱেশ কৰে। ১৯২৬ চনত ব্ৰিটিছ ডমিনিয়ন ফিল্মছৰ সৈতে তেওঁৰ আৰম্ভণি হয়, ১৯২৯ চনত দেবকী কুমাৰ বসুৰ ‘পঞ্চশৰ’ ছবিত প্ৰথমবাৰৰ বাবে পৰ্দাত দেখা যায়, আৰু পিছলৈ এজন স্বতন্ত্ৰ পৰিচালক হিচাপে প্ৰতিষ্ঠিত হয়।
অসমীয়া চিনেমাত তেওঁক শৰৎ চন্দ্ৰ চট্টোপাধ্যায়ৰ উপন্যাসৰ আধাৰত নিৰ্মিত ‘দেৱদাস’ (১৯৩৭)ৰ অসমীয়া সংস্কৰণৰ বাবে স্মৰণ কৰা হয়। বাংলা আৰু হিন্দী সংস্কৰণৰ পিছত তেওঁ পৰিচালনা কৰা এইখনেই আছিল তৃতীয় ভাষা সংস্কৰণ, য'ত ফণী শৰ্মাই দেৱদাসৰ চৰিত্ৰত অভিনয় কৰিছিল।
