Kenny Deori Basumatary is a film director and actor from Assam, best known for the martial arts comedy Local Kung Fu (2013). He dropped out of an engineering course at IIT Delhi, worked for a time as a newsreader on an Assamese news channel, and went to Mumbai in 2009 to attend a film scripting workshop. There he took small roles in commercials, television and Hindi films, and also published a book, Chocolate Guitar Momos, in 2011.
Back in Guwahati, he made Local Kung Fu with family help on a budget of roughly Rs. 95,000. The film was a critical and audience success and was nominated for best Assamese film at the first Filmfare awards for the Eastern region. He played Charlie in it, and followed it with Local Kung Fu 2 (2017), which he also wrote, directed and acted in.
His other Assamese work as director includes Suspended Inspector Boro (2018), Local Utpaat (2022), Ki Kowa, Dosti..!! (2023) and Jiya (2024), and a third Local Kung Fu film. As an actor he also appeared in Raag (2014) and Bornodi Bhotiai, and in Hindi productions such as Mary Kom, Jawan and Sam Bahadur.
