Baharul Islam

Baharul Islam is a stage and screen actor and theatre director from Assam. He trained at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, which he joined in 1987, and returned to Assam to build a career in theatre. He founded the troupe Seagull, for which he has designed and directed about thirty plays, and has acted in some eighty. In 1992-93 he joined the Tara Arts Group in London for the play Heer Ranjha, which toured the UK and Japan. He has also worked for four years in Assam's commercial mobile theatre and has written four books.

In Assamese cinema he directed Aasene Konoba Hiyaat (2000), which was also his first film, and Rodor Sithi (2014). As an actor he appears in Samiran Barua Ahi Ase, Pratyahban, The Underworld, Ajanite Mone Mone, Raktabeez, Kaaneen and Goru, and he has acted in Hindi cinema as well.

His honours include the Manohar Singh Award of the National School of Drama (2005) and the Badal Sircar Rang Ratan Award (2015).
