Angaraag Mahanta, known as Papon, is a playback singer and composer from Assam, the son of the singer Khagen Mahanta. He has sung in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and several other languages, and leads the folk-fusion band Papon and The East India Company, formed in 2007.
His first recording was an Assamese track in 1988, and his first solo album, Junaki Raati, came in 2004. In Assamese cinema the Fita database credits him with music for Dhunia Tirutabur (2009) and a cast role in Rodor Sithi (2014). His first film playback in Assamese is reported for the song "Ujai Ja Nai" in Ramdhenu (2011), which won him a best male vocalist award at the Big Assamese Music Awards.
His Hindi break came the same year with "Jiyein Kyun" from Dum Maaro Dum, followed by many Hindi and Bengali film songs. His music draws on Assamese folk and devotional traditions, blended with modern instrumentation.
