Yugadrashta

The film opens in 1956 as Goswami and his secretary-biographer Gangadhar Hazarika return by boat to his home on Majuli from an Eid gathering, which he alone among the Satra leaders attended. They talk of his ordination as Sattradhikar of the Garmur Satra in 1914, shown in flashback, and agree that society's rules are not ordained by God and that a person's worth lies in their sense of justice.

Goswami, who reformed the celibacy of his order, is shown as a man struggling with himself. In the 1920s he introduced several reforms and opposed the colonial tax regime, and a confrontation with the Sivasagar deputy commissioner ended with the officer laying his gun at his feet in respect. He championed the Mishing and Keot communities, opposed racial discrimination, and supported education for women and widow remarriage despite social censure. His role in the Quit India Movement led to an order for his arrest in 1943.

The film ends at daybreak as Goswami describes his dream of an Assam in which the Bodo, the Mishing, the Keot and the Muslims live in harmony.

Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, then Director General of Police of Assam, directed and Swapnali Mahanta produced. Moon Borkotoky stars and Anurag Saikia composed the music.

Anurag Saikia won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction in the non-feature category at the 61st National Film Awards. Further honours include the Best Music Award at the Mumbai Shorts International Film Festival and a Special Festival Mention for direction at the Delhi Shorts International Film Festival.
