Two brothers belong to a middle-class village family, and the younger one is unmarried. When the elder brother dies, the family's burden falls on Debi, a man of poor character who will do anything for his own comfort. Struggling to pay for his nephew Nilim, he mortgages the family property and falls in with a crooked moneylender, bringing unrest into the home. Nilim's mother dies young as a result, and with no money for his higher studies Nilim leaves college midway. His sister Lili urges him to keep studying and pledges the gold ornaments their mother had saved.

Meanwhile a new government doctor arrives from town. On his advice Nilim works with the Block Development Officer to start scientific farming and begins to prosper. Karabi, the BDO's daughter, whom he has liked since college, inspires his Abhijan (campaign). The rich moneylender cannot bear his progress and tries to destroy it through many forms of harassment, but fails. The old servant Madan helps resolve the troubles in various ways. The story closes with Lili's marriage, the reunion of uncle and nephew, and Nilim's wedding.
