Upen Kakati was a doctor from Dergaon in Golaghat who made his mark as a composer, playwright and novelist. He wrote his song about the 1962 Sino-Indian war while still a medical student, and it later appeared in the film Bowari with Samar Hazarika singing. He made his film debut as music director with Rashmirekha (1973), in which Bhupen Hazarika sang one of his songs. Rashmirekha was followed by Bisesh Erati, Pran-Ganga, Faguni and Bowari, five Assamese films in all.
In 1979 he turned Bisesh Erati, based on a story by Lakshmi Nandan Bora, into a film, directing it and composing its music. The film was made with contributions from the public.
He also wrote full-length and one-act plays, including Sambhranta Atithi, which was published in 1969. He died on 14 December 1980 at the age of 38 after a motorcycle accident on his way to a film shoot at Majuli, and several of his songs remain popular.
