Adil Hussain, born in Goalpara, Assam, is an actor of stage, television and film who has worked in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, English, Norwegian and French productions. He studied philosophy in Guwahati, performed in college plays and stand-up comedy, worked in mobile theatre, and trained at the National School of Drama in Delhi (1990-1993) before further study in London.
His early stage work included Othello: A Play in Black and White, which won an Edinburgh Fringe First, and he later joined the Hengul mobile theatre in Assam. He had small roles in a few Assamese films before gaining wider attention in Hindi cinema with Ishqiya (2010), and later appeared in international films such as The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Life of Pi (both 2012).
In Assamese cinema, Raag (2014) was his first lead role, playing Iqbal. Sringkhal and Rodor Sithi followed the same year, then Kothanodi. The Fita database also lists him in Maj Rati Keteki (2017), Dr. Bezbaruah 2 and Rudra (2025). At the 64th National Film Awards he received a Special Jury award for Hotel Salvation and Maj Rati Keteki.
