Story কাহিনী

The film is set in 1940s Assam, where three widows try to live with dignity under the harsh limits imposed by law and custom. The arrival of a young American scholar, a poisonous snakebite and the theft of the family jewels combine to bring a painful crisis for the young and beautiful widow Giribala.

Santwana Bardoloi directed the film, based on Indira Goswami's 1986 novel The Moth-Eaten Howdah of the Tusker (Dontal Hatir Uiye Khowa Howda). Tom Alter appears in the cast.

Reception সমালোচনা

At the 44th National Film Awards Adajya won Best Feature Film in Assamese and Best Cinematography for Mrinalkanti Das, with a special mention for Bhagirathi. It also took the Special Jury Award at the International Film Festival of India and was screened at several international festivals.

Legacy

In Santwana Bardoloi's filmography, Adajya was followed by Maj Rati Keteki (2017).
