Rajni Basumatary is a filmmaker, screenwriter, producer and actor from Assam. She grew up in a Boro family in the town of Rangapara, and studied Assamese literature at Handique Girls College, Guwahati University. In 1995 she moved to Delhi, where she began by directing corporate films.
Her first major credit in Assamese cinema came in 2004, when she produced and wrote the screenplay of the romantic drama Anuraag, directed by Bidyut Chakraborty, and also played a supporting role. The film was well received and won several Assam State Film Awards, including Best Director.
In 2014 she made her directorial debut with the Assamese feature Raag, starring Adil Hussain, Zerifa Wahid and Kenny Basumatary and produced under her banner Manna Films. It was nominated in 14 categories at the Prag Cine Awards, including Best Director and Best Screenplay for her, and won Best Actor (Male) for Hussain.
She later turned to Boro-language cinema with Jwlwi: The Seed (2019), which she wrote, directed and produced, and then Gorai Phakhri, which premiered in Vancouver in 2023. Alongside her own films she has acted in Hindi productions such as Mary Kom (2014). In 2025 she received the Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika National Award.
